Communication 101: Verbal Clarity

Ladies and Gentlemen,

My first lesson in verbal communication training is teaching verbal clarity.

Verbal clarity is the #1 reason people feel they are misunderstood.

It’s the reason people can’t talk right. It’s a cause of so many problems in today’s world of ambiguity. When we want to clearly communicate, it’s essential that we talk slowly, plainly, and clearly.

VERBAL CLARITY STEP 1:

The first step in achieving verbal clarity is volume. You can’t expect someone to hear you if you’re not talking loudly enough. If you take, for example, the following video of the choir singing one of my favorite tunes, the Battle Hymn of the Republic, you’ll see that all the members of the Choir are singing LOUDLY.

Isn’t it a great tune?

But it teaches us a lesson that everyone needs to be speaking loudly. This means employers to employees- management to ownership, ownership to shareholders, etc.

VERBAL CLARITY STEP 2: DON’T SAY ‘ UMMM’

One of the worst ways you can screw up your verbal communication is by saying umm like 1000x in a sentence. It’s something that can be improved upon almost immediately. Record yourself talking or giving a speech, and record how many times you say um during 5 minutes. If it’s more than 2x, then you should really work on it, because it’s a form of miscommunication

VERBAL CLARITY STEPĀ 3: SAY WHAT YOU MEAN AND MEAN WHAT YOU SAY

There is a crisis of communication going on across all spheres of our country and world. A lot of what people say, they don’t really mean. And what they really mean to say, they don’t say. Some of it is based on lies and deceit, the other times it’s just because you don’t know how to properly communicate. Husbands and wifes have marriage problems because of this. Children and teachers have problems because of miscommunication. It can destroy relationships, so it’s essential that you learn how to properly communicate and use verbal clarity to your favor.
